In the Sequel to Knives Out, Daniel Craig Is “All Good” With His Gay Character

In the Knives Out sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, which released this week, we find that Daniel Craig’s detective Benoit Blanc is gay. However, “it’s all okay,” according to Craig.

Craig’s Benoit character was unveiled onstage at the London Cinematic Festival, one of the few film mysteries exposed before to the film’s premiere. Craig indicated at the time that he was cool with the character’s homosexuality but would not identify who portrays Benoit’s companion in the film. However, Rian Johnson, the film’s director, commented, “There’s nobody in the world I can imagine bringing me greater delight for Benoit Blanc to be with.” Hugh Grant plays Blanc’s colleague in the film.

In a recent Deadline story, Craig declined to divulge the actor’s name, but he did elucidate on the relevance of Blanc’s sexuality. “The less of a song and dance we make about it, honestly, the better, because it just made sense,” he remarked. And, as I remarked at the LFF, who wouldn’t want to live with the human being with whom he happens to share a home? It’s pleasant and enjoyable. Why should it not be? I don’t want people to get too caught up in politics.”

Craig also mentioned that he feels much more at comfortable with Benoit’s character in the sequel. “My go-to with him in Glass Onion is that he’s tremendously interested,” Craig stated in the interview. “I believe he is kind. He’s truly interested in people’s experiences and what they have to say. It’s how he goes about his business. He may want his suspects to hang themselves, but he does this by being transparent. In the film, he declares, ‘I’m going to loosen them up.'”

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery stars Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista (as well as Hugh Grant!). It is now playing in cinemas and will be accessible on Netflix on December 23rd.
